US$ 23 Billion is the estimated manufacturing potential of the drone and its components industry in India by 2030, as per an EY-FICCI report. This report is among numerous other studies and surveys that point toward the exponentially growing drone manufacturing sector in India.

With the combination of different types of sensors and use cases, drones are becoming a part of numerous industries and are redefining traditional processes. The recent growth has also given birth to new drone startups focused on different use cases.

The future of drone manufacturing in India will usher in a wave of drone startups that will transform traditional ways of working in almost every sector. Anyone willing to become a part of this future must know about the different drone components that when put together, form a fully-functional UAV.

This blog covers all the drone components you must know of before venturing into drone manufacturing.

  1. Payload unit: The payload unit is the integral component of a drone that holds different components together and carries the load of the drone. This unit contains the fuselage and the frame. The frame acts as the skeleton of the drone and holds all components together while ensuring minimum aerodynamic resistance.
  2. Motors: Motors are used to power the rotation of the propellers. There are an equal number of motors as the propellers in a drone, and a usual setup is two propellers running clockwise and the other two anti-clockwise to balance the flight of the drone.
  3. ESC (Electronic Speed Controller): The ESC is the connection between the battery, the motors, and the flight controller. Based on the input from the flight controller, the ESC controls the power to be given to the motors.
  4. Propellers: The blades of each of the propellers rotate using the power given by the motor. This rotation creates a pressure difference, resulting in low pressure at the top of the propeller. The low-pressure area at the top pushes the drone upwards, resulting in the desired flight.
  5. Battery: Battery is the powerhouse of the drone, and a lot of factors like weight, charge cycle, energy density, and others are considered before selecting the right battery for drones. The LiPo battery is most commonly used for drone manufacturing.
  6. Flight Controller: The flight controller is the command centre of the drone and transmits instructions to the ESC to control the motors. It collects information from sensors, GPS, gyrometer, and other drone parts to assess the motion required for the drone. It is also responsible for taking the drone back to the starting point while factoring in issues it might face during flight, including winds and other conditions.
  7. Electronic controls: Numerous other electronic parts power a drone and are required for specific purposes, like the radio transmitter, the transmitter-receiver, the radio receiver, LEDs, and different drone sensors.
  8. Landing gear and linked drone accessories: The landing gear protects the drone from crashes during emergency landings and helps ensure a safe landing. The build can be different based on different drone materials.
  9. Camera: Cameras on drones vary based on the end use of the drone. Some drones might not have a single camera, whereas others might have multiple cameras.
  10. Sensors: Just like cameras, the drone sensors depend on the drone’s particular end-use case. Newer use cases of drones will promote a separate market for drone manufacturing in India.
