What is a hammer mill machine?
Hammer mill machine or hammer mill crusher is a machine in which an aggregate material is crushed into smaller particles by repeated blows of hammer. The aggregate material can be corn, coal, bagasse, corn stalks, gypsum, rocks, etc. The hammer mill consists of a shaft. Various hammers are mounted on the shaft. As the shaft rotates, the hammer impacts the aggregate material and breaks it into smaller pieces. Well, the crushing and shredding of the material happens in three stages which is shown in the upcoming section. Before moving to the actual mechanism of this hammer mill, let’s have a look at its construction.

Hammer mill construction and hammer mill parts

Schematic diagram of hammer mill machine
The hammer mill consists of
1. Feed Chute
Material is fed into the machine through a feed chute.
2. Discharge chute
The crushed material leaves the machine through the discharge chute.
3. Hammer
Hammer is used to break the material using impact. Hammers are usually made up of hardened steel and stainless steel. The two basic shapes of the hammer are stirrup and bar. Hammer blades can be with flat edges or sharp edges or both on each side.
4. Rotor disc
The disc contains holes for inserting a hammer rod.
5. Shaft
Shaft provides rotational power to the rotor disc.
6. Hammer rod
Hammer rod is used to place a hammer between the two rotor discs.
7. Screen
Screen is a filter which allows only the required particle size to pass through it.
Below video shows the arrangement of hammer, hammer rod, rotor disc and shaft.
Hammer mill mechanism
The hammers are allowed to be in continuous motion at a particular rpm. The feed material is placed in the feed chute. From the feed chute, the material travels towards the hammer. Now, the reduction of size of feed material or crushing of particles occurs in three ways:
- The feed material is first impacted by the hammer due to which it breaks into smaller sizes.
- Then, the particle hits the casing which further breaks it into smaller sizes.
- The particle also hits another particle and the size is again reduced.
The cycle keeps repeating till all the feed material is reduced to the required size. During this process, those particles who achieve the required size pass through the screen while the rest of the particles have to go through the above cycles till they achieve the required size. Below video below shows the mechanism of hammer mill.
